We all suffer back (and or neck) pain at some point during our lives. Poor posture and it’s contribution to spine related ailments is both well documented and well understood.

Of the waking hours of any given day the vast majority of our time is spent sitting in one way or another. The way our bodies and most specifically our backs are designed they are not meant to sit for long periods in a standard chair.

When we stand our back has 3 front to back curves. These are vital to help the back absorb shock. The head remains balanced over the hips. The body is balanced the muscles require very little energy to keep us upright. Unfortunately our legs become weary and we need to rest otherwise we would simply stand all day.

When sitting in a conventional chair where the thighs are parallel to the floor this all changes. While the weight is taken off our legs the back is no longer balanced or relaxed. the spinal curves are lost which inevitably leads to slumping. This puts enormous stress on the muscles of the back. Given the amount of time we spend sitting in our lives this inevitably leads to muscle pain, weakness, degeneration and over time permanent postural changes.

The core chair has been designed to maintain the balanced standing position of the spine, while being seated. Instead of the thighs being parallel with the floor they angle down. This allows the pelvis to tilt forward as it does when we stand up thus allowing the spine to keep its natural curves. This is a far more natural and efficient position in which to sit. 

In this position the muscles require much less energy to maintain balance. Also in this position the abdominal muscles play a major role in keeping us balanced and upright. Over time that means our abdominal and core muscles develop our back muscles don't get as tired and weak and our posture is maintained as muscle groups are balanced.

When sitting in a conventional chair no matter how hard we try we will slouch. With such long periods spent sitting in our busy world this leads to unsightly postural changes such as development of exaggerated kyphoses and Dowager's hump. This is worsened by the fact that over time the back muscles become overloaded while the abdominal and core muscles become weak and underutilised. It can also lead to head aches, back pain, weariness, respiratory and digestive restrictions.As muscles on the back are strained and the thoracic and abdominal contents are contrantly compressed.

Because we spend so much time sitting we need to put our body in a position it is happy to maintain. A position that is balanced and leads to development of good postural consequences. It also happens to be the position that is most comfortable once we get used to it.

It is on this principle that The Core Chair has been developed.
